Pinellas County Overview
|
Aqualea, the county's newest resort hotel is nearing completion on Clearwater Beach. |
Attracted by the mild, sub-tropical climate and miles of white sand beaches, nearly 930,000 people have made Pinellas County their home. With an average 360 days of sunshine each year and beaches ranked among the best in the U.S., the county is also the most popular tourist destination on the Gulf of Mexico, drawing 13 million tourists annually, including more than 5 million overnight visitors.
Pinellas is comprised of a diverse set of communities and while they range in population from more than 248,000 in St. Petersburg to less than 60 in Belleair Shore, nearly all capitalize on living in a waterfront paradise.
As an established county, the significant infrastructure - including schools, utilities and roadways - is already in place. Pinellas is also well connected with regional access provided via Interstate-275, two international airports, and the largest port in Florida.
Pinellas offers an extraordinary quality of life, progressive employment opportunities, relatively low cost of living, diverse housing options and high-quality colleges and universities. With its outstanding cultural, recreational and sports facilities, incomparable parks and beaches, and year round events, Pinellas provides a true resort lifestyle.
Pinellas lies at the center of the robust Tampa Bay market, which is expected to grow from its current population of 4 million to 6 million by 2030. The market’s significant economic clout is also evidenced by more than $70 billion in consumer spending and a labor force 2 million strong. The region is ranked number 20 in the U.S. for job growth and carries the country’s 13th largest media market.

Adopted in 2005, Pinellas By Design: An Economic Development and Redevelopment Plan, is the county's redevelopment strategy to foster business development, while managing population growth and preserving our quality of life. The purpose of Pinellas by Design was to identify the means by which the county can maintain and enhance its long-term economic vitality, which is threatened by the disappearance of developable vacant land. Almost every local government has passed a resolution in support of the plan, which was designed so that each community will be able to define its future vision within a shared planning framework. For detailed information on the five year planning process, including community input, analysis, and related studies go to www.pinellasbydesign.org.
Pinellas By Design estimated that some 50,000 new jobs at salary levels approximately thirty percent above the average wage will need to be created over the twenty year period through 2025 to maintain the same level of economic health that the county has enjoyed over the previous twenty years.
