EPA Announces $600,000 in Brownfield Cleanup Grants for Pinellas County

On April 8, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that Pinellas County will receive three brownfield cleanup grants totaling $600,000. The grant funds will be used to remove garbage from historic landfill sites located in the Dansville Neighborhood and fill the excavations with clean soil to transform vacant properties into home sites. Designating an area as a Brownfield can spur redevelopment efforts, revitalize a community, improve the environment, fuel job growth, increase property values and standard of living, promote secondary business creation and provide reduced construction costs and financial incentives for local businesses. Pasco County’s Brownfield Program - In The Tampa Tribune

The Tampa Tribune’s Julia Ferrante recently reported on Pasco County’s efforts to jump start a Brownfield Program in their community.  The story, “County Has Visions of Green in Brownfields,” highlighted the business, economic development and redevelopment benefits of brownfields. The Pasco County Commission recognized the advantages of brownfields and voted unanimously to create the new Pasco County program.  Read more about the benefits of brownfields in Julia Ferrante’s article published April 29, 2008, by the Tampa Tribune: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/apr/29/pa-county-has-visions-of-green-in-brownfields/

Fabulous Swedish Furniture on a Brownfield - IKEA Says “Ja” to Hillsborough Location

Hillsborough County is getting ready to welcome the international retail superstar, IKEA to the Tampa Bay region.  The Swedish company will be redeveloping a brownfield site on Adamo Drive that previously housed the former Tampa International Center.  This successful brownfield project closed on January 31, 2008, and will eventually become IKEA’s new 350,00 square foot store.
The project is expected to create 400 new jobs and an estimated ad valorem tax benefit of $1.3 million annually.  The EPC Brownfield Program made the timely closing of this redevelopment project possible.
